The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) promotes policies to minimize the environmental impacts of our member operations.  Everyone in the trade industry has a role to play in improving our air quality and fighting climate change and PMSA is committed to working across its membership, with its numerous supply chain partners, port authorities, regulatory agencies and local communities in order to find and implement the most effective emissions control strategies possible.

PMSA members are proud to be a part of ongoing efforts to improve air quality in cooperation with the ports authorities, local, state, federal and international regulatory agencies, and public officials.  PMSA member companies have led the maritime industry in developing and implementing many voluntary initiatives and projects to improve our vessels, on-dock equipment and the fuels that power them.

For a better today and tomorrow . . . PMSA Global Green.

How are we doing?

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have reported 50 percent reductions in cargo handling equipment emissions over the past 4 to 5 years as a result of voluntary and cooperative measures implemented by the ports and terminal operators.

PMSA members in Washington State are working proactively to ensure their maritime emissions remain low, and that they continue to remain in compliance with federal air quality standards. PMSA is an active participant in the Puget Sound Maritime Emissions Inventory project that will provide tools for measuring changes in air quality and helping focus emission reduction efforts to provide the greatest environmental and health benefits.
