Matson

Matson’s philosophy with regard to the environment is to go beyond mere compliance in virtually all of the company’s business activities. In 2006, Matson received the prestigious U.S. Coast Guard’s Benkert Award for Environmental Excellence. The following represent some of Matson’s “green” initiatives:

  • Matson’s four newest vessels built at Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., have modern, fuel efficient diesel engines and include state-of-the-art air emissions reduction technology including slide valves, fuel oil homogenizers, and alpha lubricators.
  • High efficiency turbo chargers on six ship service diesel generators (SSDGs) have been installed on Matson’s three C-9 vessels. In addition, one SSDG on each vessel was replaced with a more fuel efficient model and equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology which reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by at least 90%.
  • In 2006, Matson and SSAT signed the first green lease with the Port of Long Beach designed to significantly reduce air emissions from vessels and terminal handling equipment.
  • Design of the shoreside infrastructure required to cold iron
vessels is currently underway. The MV Manukai will be retrofitted with cold ironing capability during her drydock period in August 2008
    .
  • Low sulfur fuel is burned in auxiliary engines while at dock or within 24nm of the California coast.
  • To comply with the Port of Long Beach’s voluntary speed reduction program, the main propulsion boilers on three steamships were retrofitted with internal mix atomizers.
  • The MV RJ Pfeiffer participated in a West Coast Ballast Demonstration Project.
  • Ecochlor’s chlorine dioxide ballast treatment system was installed on the ITB Moku Pahu.
  • Matson hopes to be one of the first companies to obtain approval
under the USCG’s Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP).
  • Matson installed a Marinfloc AB Emulsion Breaking Bilge Water Cleaning System on our newest vessel MV Maunalei in 2006. The unit performed so well that Marinfloc units are being installed throughout the fleet. Discharge and GPS data are recorded and stored by tamper-proof monitoring system which provides verification of the accuracy of Oil Record Book entries.
  • Since 2002, it has been Matson policy to prohibit any discharges through a vessel’s oil/water separator or operation of incinerators while a vessel is within 50 miles of land. This is known as the Matson Environmental Protection Zone.
  • Matson has maintained a zero discharge policy since 1993 that no solid waste, except for food scraps, is discharged overboard. Instead, waste materials are segregated in a special “green container.”
  • One of the world's leading container transport and logistics service providers, recently demonstrated its proactive stance on reducing cargo truck emissions by voluntarily switching to cleaner trucks in Long Beach.
