San Pedro Bay Ports Container Dwell Times for August 2026

Container dwell times at the San Pedro Bay ports showed a mixed picture in August 2026, as marine terminals continued to move a high volume of cargo through the nation's busiest gateway. Local truck dwell averaged 2.95 days, while rail-destined cargo averaged 6.75 days.

Truck dwell in August 2026 at 2.95 days was down slightly from July’s 3.03 days but generally on par for truck dwells over the past year at just under 3 days. Rail dwell at 6.75 days rose slightly from July’s 6.34 days but is high compared to all periods over the past year.  Strong TEU volumes of 1,875,899 in August 2026 underscore the sustained strength of cargo demand moving through the San Pedro Bay ports even as intermodal dwell times face continued upward pressure.

“Cargo volumes moving through the San Pedro Bay ports remain strong, with truck dwell holding steady and rail dwell experiencing some additional upward movement,” said Natasha Villa, Senior Manager of Public Affairs for the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA). “Marine terminals, drayage providers, and rail partners are adapting to changing cargo patterns to maintain fluid operations, demonstrating the strength and resilience of our supply chain in the face of continued global uncertainty.”
