Container dwell times at the San Pedro Bay Port Complex closed out 2025 on a mixed note, but nonetheless reflecting continued efficiency across marine terminals as cargo volumes capped another high-throughput year. Both truck- and rail-destined cargo moved fluidly through the gateway, supported by sustained coordination among terminal operators, drayage providers, and rail partners.

Cargo destined for local delivery via truck spent an average of 2.47 days at marine terminals in December 2025. This represents a modest increase from November 2025’s 2.26 days but marks a clear improvement compared to December 2024’s 3.11-day average, underscoring continued year-over-year gains in truck cargo velocity.

Rail-destined containers averaged 5.14 days at marine terminals in December 2025. This rail dwell time improved significantly when compared to 6.53 days in December 2024, but also increased from November’s seasonal low of 3.73 days.  The year-over-year reduction highlights meaningful progress in intermodal rail performance compared to last year’s peak-season conditions.

“The December results reflect the continued reliability of the San Pedro Bay gateway,” said Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA). “Closing out the year with improved year-over-year dwell times while handling more than 20.1 million TEUs demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing collaboration across the intermodal supply chain.”
