Container dwell times at the San Pedro Bay Port Complex opened 2026 reflecting continued operational fluidity across marine terminals, with truck cargo velocity remaining strong and rail performance adjusting from December levels.
Cargo destined for local delivery via truck spent an average of 2.75 days at marine terminals in January 2026. This represents a modest increase from December 2025’s 2.47 days, in-line with recent performance. Rail-destined containers averaged 6.14 days at marine terminals in January 2026, compared to 5.14 days in December 2025. Rail dwell time rose month-over-month, for the third month in a row. When compared to January 2025 rail dwell time of 7.08, January 2026 averaged nearly one less day.
“Performance in Southern California continues to reflect stable intermodal operations supported by coordination among terminal operators, drayage providers, and rail partners,” said Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA).
