Complete December 2025 Container Traffic Statistics
Exhibits 1-3 detail the container traffic in December 2025 as reported by the North American ports that provide us with comparable data. (Please note that the Ports of Charleston and Jacksonville have yet to publish their December tallies.) Exhibits 1A and 2A display the CY 2025 TEU tallies at the ports we monitor, Exhibits 4 and 5 display changes in the U.S. West Coast ports’ share of U.S. containerized maritime trade in the latest December as well as selected previous Decembers, according to the declared weight and value of the containerized cargo. Exhibits 6 and 7 rank the Top 20 U.S. Mainland container gateways in 2025 according to the declared cargo tonnage and value reported by shippers to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Here are the December 2025 TEU tallies reported by the ports themselves.
December saw the Port of Los Angeles discharge 424,499 laden TEUs, a 7.9% decline from a year earlier but up 13.7% from December in pre-pandemic 2019. Meanwhile, outbound loaded containers from the nation’s busiest seaport amounted to 108,075 TEUs, down 2.2% year-over-year and off by 17.0% from the last month of 2019. Total moves of loaded and empty container in CY 2025 through the San Pedro Bay gateway came to 10,239,318 TEUs, a 9.7% gain over CY 2019.
The Port of Long Beach recorded 392,153 inbound loaded TEUs in December, a decline of 5.0% from a year earlier, but 23.1% more than the Southern California port handled on the eve of the COVID pandemic in December 2019. Outbound loads amounted to 102,443 TEUs, up 1.6% year-over-year but down 18.3% from the last month of 2019. Total container traffic through the port in all of 2025, 9,881,595 TEUs, up 29.5% from 2019.
Northern California’s Port of Oakland received 74,031 loaded TEUs in December, a 12.8% drop from the preceding December as well as an 8.9% decline from the inbound volume handled in December 2019. Meanwhile, 66,019 laden TEUs were shipped from the Bay Area port, a 10.9% gain from a year earlier but down 11.6% from December 2019. Total container traffic in all of 2025 amounted to 2,253,976 TEUs, down 0.4% from 2024 and 9.9% below the total volume the port handled in 2019.
Oregon’s Port of Portland reported handling 6,770 total TEUs in the year’s final month, down 24.1% from the previous December. For the whole year, the Columbia River port processed 86,387 loaded and empty TEUs in 2025, 12.7% below the volume handled in 2024, which was already 14.6% below the volume handled in 2023, which in turn was down 32.3% from 2022.
December saw the Northwest Seaport Alliance Ports of Tacoma and Seattle handle 88,398 inbound laden TEUs, a 25.3% year-over-year fall-off as well as a 16.5% decline from December 2019. Outbound loads (55,711 TEUs) were down 14.8% from a year earlier and down 26.6% from the volume shipped in December 2019. Total container traffic through the two Washington States ports in CY 2025 added up to 3,156,598 TEUs, 16.4% below the volume handled in CY 2019.
Across the border in British Columbia, both Canadian ports posted strong year-over-year gains in inbound loads in December. At the Port of Vancouver, the 161,886 inbound loaded TEUs represented an 11.7% increase from a year earlier, while the Port of Prince Rupert saw its inbound loaded TEU traffic soar by 48.6% to 30,547 TEUs. Outbound loads in December (71,472 TEUs at Vancouver and 13,017 TEUs at Prince Rupert) were up 0.6% and 60.4%, respectively. Total container traffic in 2025 amounted to 3,778,996 TEUs at Vancouver and 885,797 TEUs at Prince Rupert. Vancouver handled 11.2% more TEUs last year than it had in 2019, but Prince Rupert’s total volume in 2025 was down 26.8% from 2019.
On the Eastern Seaboard, the Port of New York/New Jersey reported 329,914 inbound loads in December, a 5.4% decline from a year earlier but 14.2% higher than the number of TEUs discharged in December 2019. Outbound loads (105,438 TEUs) were down 6.3% year-over-year as well as down 4.8% from the last month of 2019. Total TEU traffic for all of 2025 through the nation’s third busiest container port amounted to 8,897,531 TEUs, up by 19.1% from CY 2019.
Along the Mid-Atlantic coast, the Port of Virginia recorded 127,602 inbound loaded TEUs in December, a 1.2% year-over-year decline but still up 23.2% from the volume reported in December 2019. Outbound loads of 85,160 TEUs were off by 12.3% from a year earlier but up 8.8% over the last month of 2019. Total container traffic throughout 2025 amounted to 3,239,638 TEUs, a 10.3% gain over 2019.
South Carolina’s Port of Charleston handled a CY 2025 total of 2,565,298 loaded and empty TEUs, a 5.3% increase over CY 2019.
The Port of Savannah discharged 221,755 laden TEUs in December, down by 0.8% from a year earlier but up 28.8% from the last month of 2019. The 110,419 outbound loads shipped from the Georgis port in December were up 0.4% year-over-year but down 0.8% from December 2019. The 5,691,480 loaded and empty TEUs handled by the port in CY 2925 represented a 23.8% gain over CY 2019.
On the Gulf Coast, Port Houston handled 148,369 laden inbound TEUs in December, down by 0.8% from a year earlier but 48.0% more than in December 2019. Outbound loads of 131,746 TEUs were down 2.7% year-over-year but up 20.1% over the final month of 2019. CY 2025 total container traffic (4,303,345 TEUs) represented a 43.9% gain over CY 2019.
