In June 2025, dwell times at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach continued to reflect consistent operational performance across both truck and rail modes, despite ongoing instability in cargo volumes. Notably, rail-destined cargo dwell significantly improved, dropping to 3.29 days, representing the lowest average recorded rail dwell since December 2021. This impressive performance, reflecting improved inland cargo movement and greater supply chain velocity, marks a substantial reduction from the previous month’s average of 4.70 days, a 30% decrease compared to the same time last year and reflects enhanced coordination between marine terminals and railroad operators.

Local truck dwell times also held steady, averaging 2.55 days, a modest improvement that further underscores adequate trucking capacity and sustained efficiency at the nation’s busiest port complex.

“June’s dwell time performance is a milestone worth highlighting. Not only did rail dwell drop to its lowest level in years, but local truck dwell times also continued their steady improvement,” said Natasha Villa, External Affairs Manager of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA). “These trends demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of port operations, even amid shifting trade patterns. This highlights the coordinated efforts of terminal operators, railroads, and trucking partners to keep cargo flowing efficiently through the San Pedro Bay port complex.”
