WSC Launches Global Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard

By World Shipping Council

The World Shipping Council (WSC) has launched a new Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard, tracking the global liner shipping industry’s investment in ships capable of running on renewable and lower-emission fuels.

The dashboard provides a quarterly snapshot of how the global liner fleet is preparing for the transition to net zero.

The latest data shows:

  • 353 dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers are already in operation.

  • 682 additional ships are on order.

  • 79% of all liner ship orders are for dual-fuel vessels, compared to 14% of all orders for the rest of the fleet (by deadweight tonnage).

Dual-fuel engines enable ships to operate on conventional fuels today while being ready to use renewable alternatives such as methanol or methane as these fuels become available at scale and become commercially viable.

Following the adjournment of discussions at the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) last week, WSC has said that the additional year of discussions must be used to close remaining gaps and ensure an effective global agreement.

In a statement, WSC said “the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy and industry investment trajectory remain aligned toward net zero by 2050. The liner industry is committed to that goal and has invested USD 150 billion in ships designed to run on green fuels."

WSC again underlined that "a globally agreed framework is needed to provide a level playing field to get there. The IMO remains the right place to deliver a global solution."

The new dashboard launched by WSC illustrates that the transition is already well underway. What’s still required, as WSC notes, is a clear and effective global framework that delivers the necessary regulatory consistency, supports renewable fuel production and infrastructure, and keeps shipping’s energy transition on track.
